Unconventional Gas Exploration and Extraction will affect the whole of South Africa,
impacting our health, water, food security and biodiversity. Below is the PASA (Petroleum Agency of SA) map to give you an idea of the extent of the area under threat. The PASA website has lots of information you might find interesting. http://petroleumagencysa.com/
“It’s a mad gas grab by entrepreneurs who will most likely sell to the highest bidder if they find anything. This is a high risk, high reward business – the issue is that the community and the general public take all the risks and the companies and government take all the reward. There are better and less risky alternative futures for energy.” Francois du Toit
Current Applications include:

Gas Pipeline and EGI Expansion: Strategic Environmental Assessment has been completed. https://gasnetwork.csir.co.za/final-sea-reports/ Of concern is this paragraph “In terms of a way forward, based on the findings of the SEA Process, it is proposed that gas pipeline infrastructure projects planned within the Gas Pipeline Corridors (once gazetted) will be subject to a Basic Assessment Process instead of a full Scoping and EIA Process in terms of the NEMA EIA Regulations. The streamlined Environmental Authorisation process will also include a reduced decision-making timeframe. In addition, it is proposed that EGI projects planned within the Expanded EGI Corridors (once gazetted), as well as the five gazetted EGI corridors, will be exempted from obtaining an Environmental Authorisation in terms of the NEMA EIA Regulations, provided that there is compliance with the Standard (once gazetted).”
